Stencyl’s Pencyl -v- Game Maker Drag and Drop
Pencyl, Stencyl’s script builder has been compared to the drag and drop features currently available in Game Maker.
Last month Jon from Stencyl posted a comparison between Game Maker and Pencyl on the Stencyl forum. The mood on the Stencyl forums seems positive as space is used more effectively than in Game Maker which has retained the same interface for a good number of years now.
Hopefully Stencyl will give Game Maker the kick up the arse it most certainly deserves, especially considering it is now no-longer a one man band but the product of a commercial business.
Thanks for the mention. We’re actually deprecating that system at the moment and going after something completely different that is even easier to use and more efficient than a traditional events system and will reveal that as well as other project news in December.

Stop sounding like a 10 year old, and actually talk with facts.
Some people decide that they can make money by making & selling programs. Those are called programmers, they have family, home and need to eat. Some others decide that they want to create a program just for hobby or because they are happy to see other people using it. That’s the people in Stencyl.
Game Maker is an awesome program, I’ve been using it since 2004, initially created by one (1) man, and now extended with the help of the people in Yoyogames. There would be a Mac version this year, PC users will be able to output games for Mac as well, and the runtime will be rewritten in C so more platforms can be reached like Linux, Nintendo DS, Wii or Xbox, Mark Overmars stated himself.
Not to seem closed-minded, I am also using Game Editor for mobile games and Multimedia Fusion with Vitalize! for browser games as well. I like that I’ll have Stencyl in my available gamedev tools, but it’s hard to compare Stencyl with Game Maker when it is not out yet, or say that Stencyl is better than Game Maker, because GM costs $20!. Damn, GM should cost even more!

We had some unfortunate downtime that we’ve traced down to server problems involving a kernel panic, the equivalent of a BSOD basically. This brought the server down repeatedly over the week.
There’s been no hacking, no data loss and nothing but an unstable server. We’re working closely with our data center to resolve the issue.
Well, I know this will be normal for now, but down agian incase anyones wondering…
The one responsible for maintaining the website has to work his schedule out around school as well so it is understandable that it is taking a long time to sort out. Measures are being taken to fix the problem so it doesn’t happen again, so we just need to have a little patience and understanding before things are back to normal there.
We’ve bought a new server and are in the final stages of setting it up (just need to finish transferring the database over tomorrow). The new server has the added bonus of being faster to boot.
shut your trap, u just made a gimmick of game maker, and everyone knows Game Maker is better, for one, Game Maker has 3d functionality, support, but do u c that in stencyl, or pencyl, nope, and that’s why Game Maker is larger, and more powerful, plus did I mention u can make and add, action libraries, and extensions, and of course even add them to Game Maker and toggle them on or off, these extend it’s capability, now I bet u can’t do that with stencyl, or pencyl, or what ever the hell u want to call, it and Game Maker can make:

2.A shooter(Horizontal, Vertical, Both)
3.A top down shooter
4.A platform game
5.A Sonic game
6.A Mario game
7.A Application(notepad, msn like program, paint, icon editor, did I mention a bot for a chat room, and a chat room, and a chat room with a very intelligent learning bot which acts very human)

It can also make arcade games, like pinball, space invaders, commercial quality gaming, Mac support for the application, and games to be played on the Mac, Linux, Apple Mac, and moving along to the Iphone, and many other consoles and going know where but up.
Actually, I don’t think you have a point to make. You have never used Stencyl. It’s not a gimmick, it’s just another program to make games with. Why isn’t Game Maker a gimmick of any random game library I show you? You can extend Stencyl by writing your own snippets.
Stencyl is also pretty capable. It may not have 3d support built-in, but since you can write snippets in Java you could most likely put in your own 3d engine. And by itself, it can do pretty much all the other things you’ve mentioned, except the online stuff, which should be available in later versions and (again) could be coded yourself in snippets. What makes Game Maker commercial quality and Stencyl not anyway? That depends on the creator’s skill.
Game Maker can’t be used on anything but Windows for now, and each platform they add will take plenty of work. Stencyl is written in Java, so it can, by default, be run on Windows, Mac, Linux, soon-to-be the iPhone (which I highly doubt Game Maker will be able to do anytime soon, since the iPhone SDK is Mac-only, while the iPhone processor actually supports Java bytecodes as native instructions).
Now, don’t think I’m just blindly defending Stencyl, I just can’t stand people who don’t pay any attention to what they’re flaming.
